Susan Hefuna was born in Germany in 1962. Born to an Egyptian father and a German mother, she was raised in Egypt, Germany and Austria. Hefuna draws on her life and experiences in the different cultures of Egypt and Germany to create the works with a variety of media, including drawing, fabric, video, performance, photography, sculpture and installation.

Abstract images and symbols, multiple structures stitched together with thread, traditional “Mashrabiya” patterns in Islamic architectures, and sometimes physical movements are incorporated into the works, asking us a question about the meaning of images while the motifs and techniques are crossing different cultures and traditions.

Working mainly in Europe, she has already exhibited and performed abroad at MoMA (NY, 2010), The New Museum (NY, 2014) and Guggenheim Museum (NYC, 2016 and Abu Dhabi, 2017), as well as at Centre Pompidou, Paris (2020) . The artist has received international recognition, including the Contemporary Drawing Prize of the Daniel & Florence Guerlain Art Foundationin in Paris (2013).

This exhibition, held in Japan for the first time, focuses on three key elements that form the pillars of Hefuna's diverse body of work: drawing, fabric and video. The exhibition includes drawings with layered and transparent structures, tapestries made of embroidered Egyptian cotton fabric, and representative video works. The idea of this exhibition was naturally formulated through the artist's six visits to Japan.
