Biography

1897 Albert Renger-Patzsch was born June 22nd in Würzburg, the youngest of three sons. Because his father was a musician and also an amateur photographer, Albert learned techniques of photography early on.
1919 He started studying chemistry at the Institute of Technology in Dresden.
1920-22 He had contacts with the circle around Karl Ernst Osthaus in Hagen and began working as a photographer at the Folkwang Publishing House.
1925 His first photo documentation “Das Chorgestühl von Kappenberg” was published by Auriga.
He moved to Bad Harzburg and opened his studio where he held his first solo exhibition the same years.
1928 His most noted portfolio, “Die Welt ist Schön” was published.
1930 His solo exhibitions were held in Paris and London.
1938 In April he visited Herman Hesse in Montagnola. Correspondence and occasional visits continued until Hesse’s death.
1947 “Beständige Welt”, a small volume with landscape photographs, was published.
1957 He was awarded the David Octavius Hill Medal by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Lichtbildner (Society of German Photographers).
1960 He was awarded the culture prize of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (German Society for Photoraphy) in Cologne.
1963 A ‘Portrait of the Photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch’ was broadcasted on German TV.
1966 Albert Renger-Patzsch died September 27th in Wamel.
