1884 - 1890 Studied at the Education Department of the Museum of Decorative Arts, Berlin
1890 - 1896 Traveled on behalf of the botanical documentation project initiated by his drawing teacher Moritz Meurer to Italy, Greece, and North Africa
1898 First teaching position, responsible for the modeling class of the Royal Art Academy, Berlin (promoted to full professor in 1921)
1899 Given full responsibility for the newly established course “Modeling after Living Plants” at the Education Department of the Museum of Decorative Arts, Berlin, he started to use plant photography for instruction
1912 Further travels to the south of Europe and north Africa
1926 First exhibition of his plant documentation photography in the exhibition “Urformen” (Archetypes) at the Nierendorf Gallery Berlin
1928 The catalogue subsequently issued by Nierendorf “Urformen der Kunst” quickly became an international bestseller, with a second edition in the following year. It was later translated among others to English (Art Forms in Nature) and French (Les formes originelles de l’art)
